Eastern European Languages: Translation, Typesetting, Websites, Subtitles and Voice Overs

Some countries are mislabelled as Eastern European such as Poland whereas infact they are Central European. This is reflected in the type of fonts used when translating such languages. Russian translations are made using a CY font or Cyrillic such as Helvetica CY whereas Polish uses CE or Central European fonts such as Helvetica CE. Other languages including Turkish have their own classification of font, in this case it would be Helvetica Turkish that has to be used as only Turkish has an undotted i <ı> which is not in the fonts for CY or CE languages.

The United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) classifications are:

  1. Eastern Europe, Northern and Central Asia Division:  Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Georgia, Russian Federation, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia and Uzbekistan.
  2. East Central and South-East Europe Division:
Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus,
Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia,
    Republic of Macedonia, Turkey, Ukraine.

Adelphi Translations has worked in all of these languages producing translation, typesetting, websites, subtitles and voice overs. Below are some examples of our work:
