Although Hindi is the official language of India (with English as the other) there are several hundred other languages spoken in the country. The most important of these are arguably Bengali, Punjabi, and Gujarati, especially when we take into account the languages required to service the large Indian community living in the UK.

Historically, Typesetting Indian languages has posed problems due to the technical problems of dealing with non-standard Indian fonts. Indian fonts have often been produced with no reference to other fonts for the same script. What this means in practise is that, when using a standard English keyboard, one font may have a character on the ‘G’ key, while another font, for the same script, may have the same character on the ‘L’ key. So when typesetting Indian languages it simply is not possible to switch between fonts, as you can in English, as identical Indian character may mapped to different positions on the keyboard. In order to make some translations work when typesetting Indian languages it has often been necessary to retype the translation in a font which will work. But which fonts work for which languages?

Standard Typesetting software, such as Adobe Indesign, often do not recognise certain characters in particular fonts.
