Adelphi Translations has translated, typeset, created websites and subtitles and voice- overs in most Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam and Punjabi.
Amnesty International
We recently were asked by Amnesty International to produce a series of documents including 10 case-sheets, a poster and an overview brochure in both Hindi and Bengali (Bangla).
The original files were QuarkXpress 8 and were to be reproduced on a Mac. The translations were provided by Amnesty . In order to make sure the Indian fonts would display correctly we installed an intermediate piece of software that prevents the corruption of certain characters, which would otherwise be problematic. Indian fonts are historically very poorly made and often do not show correctly in modern typesetting software. Both languages were typeset in the Adelphi studio using native speakers, which is our normal procedure for typesetting non-latin based languages.

Tesco Questionnaires
Adelphi have been producing materials for Tesco for over 5 years now and many of these include Indian languages such as Bengali, Hindi, Gujarati and Tamil for the company’s in-house staff questionnaires. The projects require updating from time to time as the questions change and languages are added.

Glasgow Asylum Team
Adelphi Translations regularly typeset Gujarati as part of various projects, such as a 90 page welcome brochure for Glasgow Asylum Team in eight languages. We flew up to Glasgow for a meeting with the production team, organising the project schedule and methods of production so that printing would not be a problem and left exactly 24 hours before someone decided to try and blow up the airport!
The project was done using InDesign on both PC and Mac. Print ready PDFs were supplied for printing.

Translation Agencies
We also work for other translation agencies, providing them with services such as typesetting brochures, manuals, annual reports, leaflets, posters etc. plus website conversions, voice overs and subtitles that they don’t have the expertise to carry out themselves. One such agency we have been working with for over five years asked us to typeset the Malayalam below on behalf of one of their clients.

Hindi Font problems
Historically, Typesetting Indian languages has been difficult due to the technical problems of dealing with non-standard Indian fonts. Indian fonts have often been produced with no reference to other fonts for the same script. What this means in practise is that, when using a standard English keyboard, one font may have a character on the ‘G’ key, while another font, for the same script, may have the same character on the ‘L’ key. So when typesetting Indian languages it simply is not possible to switch between fonts, as you can in English, as identical Indian character may mapped to different positions on the keyboard. These problems are also there for other languages such as Gujarati, Bengali etc.
Standard Typesetting software, such as Adobe Indesign, often do not recognise certain characters in particular fonts. Adelphi Translations has undertaken extensive tests over the last ten years to establish which fonts render correctly when typesetting Indian languages so you can trust all your Indian Language typesetting projects to us.
